Unfortunately I never did play at the same time that Elvis was there. With the Bob Luman band we had a very similar format, played the same songs and in the same style, with a stand-up bass and me playing lead. We were always friends and very close. We were 25 years old. One of my favourites. They weren’t very long, probably 45-minute shows. I like the hills and the way it feels and almost anywhere you go you run into songwriters. We would be playing poker upstairs while they were cutting tracks downstairs. I guess they stood about everything they could, they were dying to get over that fence and come and attack us. It was the same thing with ‘Fools Rush In.’ Just too bad I didn’t write 3 or 4 songs to get him to sing! Stax was a little nearer Graceland, but American & Hi studios, all of them were in the worst parts of town. We would perform 4 weeks straight and we’d do 2 shows a night non-stop everyday for thirty days! We played Steel Pier at Atlantic City five years in a row to incredible audiences, we would play six or seven shows a day, we would come on and do twenty minutes, then Les Brown’s orchestra would play twenty minutes, Bobby Rydell, Jimmy Clanton, Dion & The Belmonts, groups like that coming in every twenty minutes. So I was really supposed to be on that plane that killed Otis and the band – but having to stay back for the overdubs on ‘Dock Of The Bay’ saved my life! He says "Hey, let’s record that!
